NBC University Theater

NBC University Theater treated literary adaptation as serious network programming rather than cultural decoration. Its hour-long productions brought major novels, stories and plays to radio with a mixture of dramatization and commentary, often asking listeners to consider the original work as well as the performance.

Program Guide

Program History

A literary anthology presenting radio adaptations of important novels and plays, designed to bring major works of literature to a broad audience and at times used alongside university study programs.

Prestige literary anthology adapting major novels, short stories and plays, often with scholarly commentary and university-study/college-credit tie-ins.

The run breaks into several distinct periods: NBC University Theater (July 30, 1948 to February 14, 1951) on NBC Radio Network.

Names that turn up again and again in the surviving run include Andrew C. Love (director and performer), Don Stanley (announcer and performer), Albert Harris (composer and conductor), Donald Morrison (performer), Ben Wright (performer), Ramsay Hill (performer and narrator), and Ernest Kinoy (writer and radio adaptor).

Across its run, the surviving broadcasts are tied to NBC Radio Network, WMAQ, and CBS Radio Network.

The stories often return to literature and education, class and social hierarchy, war and military conflict, family and marriage, crime and violence, and colonialism and empire.

The show also sits in a wider radio history that includes College-credit radio literature experiment, 1948 Peabody recognition, and Worlds Great Novels to NBC University Theater.

If you are following the same actors and creative circles, related programs worth opening next include Lux Radio Theatre, Escape, Screen Directors Playhouse, Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar, and The Whistler.
