Tony Barrett
Tony Barrett was a prolific radio character actor and the long-running Mark Donovan on The Adventures of Frank Race before reinventing himself as a television writer and producer on Peter Gunn and The Mod Squad.
Biography
Tony Barrett’s career split almost perfectly across the microphone and the writer’s room. Born Martin Lefkowitz in New York City in 1916, he first became valuable to radio as a character actor, the kind of performer who could move through accents, ages and social types without carrying one fixed persona from program to program.
One of his most important continuing roles was Mark Donovan on The Adventures of Frank Race. Frank Race was the globe-trotting insurance investigator, but Donovan was the human counterweight, a cab driver, valet and associate whose humor and practical reactions kept the adventures from floating entirely into pulp fantasy. Barrett remained with the role across the series even as the title actor changed from Tom Collins to Paul Dubov.
That steadiness tells a great deal about Barrett’s craft. A supporting actor in syndicated adventure radio had to create familiarity without becoming repetitive. Donovan needed to sound like the same man from episode to episode while still reacting freshly to new countries, criminals and absurd predicaments. Barrett made the part flexible enough to survive the series’ changing lead.
Elsewhere on radio, Barrett worked extensively in crime and western drama, including Tales of the Texas Rangers, Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar, Broadway Is My Beat, This Is Your FBI and Escape. Those programs used him very differently from Frank Race, often as suspects, officials, criminals or one-shot supporting figures. The workload made him part of the professional West Coast repertory that could populate almost any story on short notice.
Then Barrett changed careers without leaving storytelling behind. In television he became a writer and producer, writing or co-writing much of the second and third seasons of Peter Gunn and later serving as an important writer-producer on The Mod Squad. The shift makes sense when viewed from radio. Years spent inside tightly structured half-hour scripts had already taught him where dialogue carried character, where exposition became dead weight and how supporting figures could sharpen a lead.
