An amnesiac former soldier known as Smithy escapes an institution, falls in love with Paula and builds a quiet married life with her. An accident restores his identity as wealthy Charles Rainier while erasing his memories of Paula and the years they shared. Paula later returns to his life without revealing the full truth, waiting for his memory to return, and their long separation finally ends when familiar places unlock the past and Smithy recognizes her again.
