Two lonely, cynical clubmen spend Christmas Eve listening to a mysterious waiter recount a modern Nativity-like story from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. A stranded Mary and Joseph take refuge in a stable, where a trucker, a doctor, a lawyer, a merchant and policemen rally around the birth of their child while pursuing a stolen star sapphire. When the clubmen learn no such waiter was on duty, the story leaves them newly aware of charity, companionship and the spirit of Christmas.
