Queen Elizabeth and the Earl of Essex are bound by love but divided by pride, ambition and the demands of the English throne. Essex defies the queen during the Irish campaign, returns with armed supporters and is imprisoned for treason. In their final meeting both admit their love, but Essex warns that pardoning him would only renew his challenge to Elizabeth’s authority, and he accepts execution so that she may continue to rule.
