European refugee George Iscovescu is stranded in Mexico waiting for permission to enter the United States when he plans a marriage of convenience to American schoolteacher Emmy. The scheme changes when he genuinely falls in love with her, but its discovery drives Emmy away and she is badly hurt in a crash. George crosses the border illegally to reach her, and an immigration inspector ultimately gives the reformed George a chance to enter legally and reunite with his wife.
