River’s End prepares an elaborate medical-society dinner for visiting Sir Thomas Beaton, one of the world’s leading throat specialists, and Dr. Christian is assigned to meet the distinguished guest at the train. A fierce blizzard is already burying the roads, however, and Christian has another concern: Esther Denby, a seriously ill young woman living with her family at an isolated mountain farm. Instead of escorting Sir Thomas to his banquet, Christian persuades the irritated surgeon to carry his instruments and struggle with him through waist-deep snow to the Denby home. Once there, Sir Thomas realizes that Esther needs the very specialized treatment he can provide and performs the operation that may save her life. The two doctors miss the dinner entirely. Afterward, warming themselves over coffee, Sir Thomas admits that the exhausting detour has reminded him of something professional fame had allowed him to forget: a doctor’s first obligation is to the sick person who needs him. He raises his own toast to Dr. Christian, the country doctor who made the celebrated guest of honor remember what it means to practice medicine.
