When Dr. Christian finds reclusive Ivy Fenner freezing and hungry in an unheated house, he treats her as Rivers End's neediest case and organizes food, fuel, blankets, medical care and small comforts she cannot afford. Ivy remains prickly and suspicious, especially whenever anyone goes near her old mattress. After her sudden death, the reason becomes clear: ten thousand dollars has been hidden inside it, making the supposed pauper a secret miser. At first the money appears destined for the state because she left no known will, until the telephone men produce a note Ivy wrote and had them witness when they installed her phone. It leaves her estate to the only good friend she believed she had, Dr. Paul Christian, giving him the chance to turn her hoarded money toward helping others.
