After the opening music, Gene recalls driving about 320 cattle toward a river crossing controlled by a reclusive landowner. A man claiming to be the hermit's nephew says the old man drowned, produces a will leaving him the property and suddenly demands two dollars a head to cross. Gene becomes suspicious and checks the land records, discovering that the supposed will bears a written signature even though the hermit had always signed his deed with an X because he could not write. The 'nephew' is exposed as having kidnapped the living hermit and forged the inheritance so he could profit from passing cattle herds; he ultimately receives a life sentence, and Gene gets the herd across the river.
