After the opening song, Gene receives a coded poem from imprisoned bank robber Ben Curlin. Two criminals who intercepted the message believe it reveals where more than ,000 in unrecovered robbery money is hidden; they let Gene work on the cipher, then seize and beat him trying to learn the answer. Gene decodes references to Halloween, an old deserted house and a substitution of the letter W for B, which points him to the well at old man Larkin's place. The criminals confront Gene and Johnny there, but are overpowered, the hidden money is recovered from the well, and the men are taken to the sheriff.
