Inspector Collins investigates a special train that vanishes completely between stations despite apparently having no place to leave the main line. The mystery leads to railway official Bland, who bribed members of the crew and diverted the train down a mine spur into a shaft before covering the crime with a cave-in; the dead engineer's body and the surviving conspirators finally expose the scheme.
