Bandleader Eddie Block builds his fame by turning a forbidden voodoo chant into his signature number despite Papa Benjamin's warning that profaning it carries a death curse. As Block wastes away and finds a doll being used against him, he returns to New Orleans and kills Papa Benjamin in desperation; police break up the voodoo circle and Block recovers, but his decision to perform the chant again leaves the threat unresolved.
