Love On A Diet

Dorothy Corbett breaks down after her daughter Margo, looking at an old photograph, innocently remarks that Dorothy used to be pretty. Dr. Christian discovers that years with domineering, jealous husband Dave have stripped Dorothy of nearly every pleasure and sign of individuality: she no longer goes out, dresses attractively or receives the affection she once knew. Treating the problem as emotional starvation rather than an ordinary illness, he and Margo restore Dorothy's hair, clothes and confidence and arrange harmless masculine attention from Arnold Darrow, who is actually Margo's fiancé. Dave returns unexpectedly, sees his transformed wife with Arnold and assumes an affair, even threatening divorce and blaming Dr. Christian. The doctor forces Dave to confront the truth that his possessiveness has nearly destroyed Dorothy. When Margo reveals Arnold belongs to her, Dorothy's collapse finally breaks through Dave's anger. He calls his wife by the old pet name 'Dolly' and resumes the tenderness he abandoned years earlier, giving her a reason to want life again.
