Mary Bartlett is nearly penniless after her husband Ben leaves for Center City to find work soon after their baby's birth and sends only a single message in six weeks. Forced from her room and desperate to find him, Mary leaves the baby safely bundled at the bus station with a note asking someone to care for him while she walks into a Christmas snowstorm. Children from the church pageant discover the baby, while Dr. Christian travels to Center City and finds that Ben has finally secured steady work but was ashamed to write while he remained unemployed. On the return trip they find Mary collapsed in the snow and bring her back to Rivers End. The family is reunited at the Christmas pageant, where Mary discovers her own baby safe in the manger beneath the star of Bethlehem.
