Unemployed and embittered Dan Smithers has little use for patriotic speeches until work on a Washingtons Birthday pageant forces him to study the real hardships behind the countrys founding. The history changes his outlook on freedom and responsibility just as he is trying to provide for his wife Marianne and their new baby. By the end, Dan has a job, a renewed sense of purpose, and a son born on Washingtons Birthday whom he hopes to name George.
