Dr. Christian attends the twenty-fifth anniversary celebration of admired former governor Charles Van Ness and his wife Carolyn, a couple everyone in Rivers End regards as an ideal marriage. Charlie leaves the party on a winter night and is killed when his car skids on a mountain road. After Christian brings the news home, Carolyn finally admits that the public image was false: she had repeatedly protected Charlie's reputation and hidden how unhappy their marriage really was. Returning to the crash scene, Christian finds that Charlie apparently swerved to avoid Cliff Peters, the town drunk, who is also found dead nearby. Everyone expects Cliff's wife Ellen to feel relieved to be free of him, but she remembers a very different man, a loving husband and father whose kindness the town never saw. The two deaths overturn Rivers End's easy judgments about both marriages and leave Christian reflecting on how little outsiders can truly know about another person's love.
