On a bitter night Dr. Christian answers a call to the cramped home of Tony and Rosa Donello and finds Rosa critically ill from a ruptured appendix. Rosa is terrified of hospitals because her sister died in one, and Tony has promised she will not be taken away. When the doctor insists that surgery offers her only chance, Tony pulls a gun and orders him to operate in the apartment instead. With Judy boiling water and improvising sterile conditions from whatever they can find, Dr. Christian performs the emergency operation there rather than abandon Rosa. She survives and is later recovering safely, while an overwhelmed Tony offers everything he has in gratitude. The doctor refuses a real fee and keeps one of Tony's barber tools as a souvenir.
