Professor John Boswell refuses to approve his daughter Betty's marriage to young Alec Dale because Alec intends to become an inventor after leaving the Army. Rather than argue directly, Dr. Christian tells Boswell an outrageous college story about Professor Erasmus Doke, his brilliant student Aloysius O'Flannigan and Doke's daughter Patsy. In Christian's tale, Doke's experiments with the fourth dimension leave him only partly visible. Aloysius understands the mathematics well enough to restore him, but will help only if Doke accepts his courtship of Patsy. Doke stubbornly refuses and tries to live half-invisible, producing classroom chaos, public panic and an absurd arrest in which police struggle with the visible and invisible halves of him. Humiliated, Doke finally gives in, Aloysius restores him, and the young couple's engagement follows. Boswell suspects Christian invented the whole story, but the lesson works: he admits he may have been too hard on Alec and agrees to reconsider rather than trying to stop the younger generation from choosing for itself.
