A celebrated thief escapes from prison in southern France and turns the pursuit by detective L'Amir into a contest of vanity and wits. As fear and obsession distort everyone around him, he realizes he cannot truly defeat the hunter who has come to represent fate itself; rather than be dragged down by the manhunt, he stages his own theatrical surrender by stepping into the empty frame of a great portrait and drawing back the curtains.
