A newspaper crime drama about photographer Jack 'Flashgun' Casey, whose work at crime scenes repeatedly draws him into solving murders and other mysteries.
CBS crime/mystery drama adapted from George Harmon Coxe's newspaper photographer character Jack 'Flashgun' Casey. Casey works for the Morning Express, investigates crimes with reporter Ann Williams, and regularly returns to the Blue Note Cafe with bartender Ethelbert.
The run breaks into several distinct periods: Flashgun Casey (July 7, 1943 to January 29, 1944) on CBS Radio Network, Casey, Press Photographer (February 5, 1944 to July 4, 1945) on CBS Radio Network, Crime Photographer (July 11, 1945 to March 13, 1947) on CBS Radio Network, and Casey, Crime Photographer (March 20, 1947 to November 16, 1950) on CBS Radio Network.
Names that turn up again and again in the surviving run include George Harmon Coxe (creator and performer), Staats Cotsworth (performer), John Gibson (performer), Alonzo Deen Cole (writer, creator, and performer), Herman Chittison (piano, performer, and pianist), Jan Miner (performer), and John Dietz (director, producer, and performer).
Across its run, the surviving broadcasts are tied to CBS Radio Network, Armed Forces Radio Service, and Armed Forces Radio and Television Service.
The stories often return to murder and homicide, robbery, theft and stolen property, police investigation and criminal justice, framing, disguise and deception, crime-scene photography and photographic evidence, and newspaper reporting and journalism.
The show also sits in a wider radio history that includes Pulp-to-radio detective adaptation, Commercial sponsor eras, Radio-to-television transition, and Urban newspaper crime culture.
