A dramatization of Robert Carse's Lifeline honors the United States Merchant Marine and the dangerous supply routes that sustained Allied forces. An able seaman describes Arctic convoys, sinkings, lifeboat ordeals and the poor treatment merchant crews sometimes received ashore, then recounts the courage of shipmates carrying men and supplies into combat zones. The closing Guadalcanal episode follows a merchant sailor who volunteers to handle landing craft under fire, is badly wounded getting Marines ashore and dies after completing his job.
