The Silver Buckle

Two train robbers kill passenger Carl Davis after mistaking the silver-colored buckle on his anniversary belt for real silver. Later Britt meets brothers Kit and Lex Springer, who claim to be posse members hunting the bandits for a reward and ask him to guide them through Miller Pass. A bloodstain on Kit's fancy belt and other inconsistencies make Britt suspicious, and he overhears the brothers admit they are the robbers before they try to kill him. Britt survives the ambush long enough for the real posse to arrive; during Kit's attempted escape, his horse goes over the trail edge and the stolen belt catches on the saddle, leaving him fatally trapped by the very buckle that marked the crime.
