General Guilford’s Widow

Britt becomes lost near Minton and meets Hannah Guilford, widow of celebrated General William Guilford, who insists that her husband is still alive despite the monument honoring his death with his regiment five years earlier. Britt discovers that the general really has been hiding in the house: illness had taken him away from his command just before a Cheyenne attack wiped out his men, and when he returned home to find himself praised as a dead hero he was too afraid of a court-martial or accusations of desertion to reveal the truth. Hannah has sacrificed five years protecting the secret, but finally refuses to continue when Guilford threatens Britt rather than face the consequences. The general dies moments later, and a fire destroys the house with his body inside; Britt allows the public to keep its heroic version of Guilford's death while Hannah is finally able to begin a new life.
