Britt arrives in Tower Rock for the county fair and is maneuvered into judging a strawberry-preserve contest at the center of a bitter feud between Selma Bingham and Bessie Madden, a quarrel that has divided their husbands and much of the town. Rather than declare either woman the winner and deepen the fight, Britt awards the blue ribbon to preserves he ate at Gravy Gibson's lunchroom. Selma, Bessie, and their husbands instantly unite in outrage at Britt and walk off together, effectively ending their feud. Britt privately admits that Gravy's coffee had burned his tongue so badly he could hardly taste the entries anyway.
