Apron Faced Sorrel

Sixteen-year-old Clay Fenton arrives for a summer on a ranch determined to hide his terror of horses, a fear dating from the accident that killed his father and scarred Clay when he was a small child. After being mocked and thrown by a difficult apron-faced sorrel, Clay secretly whips the horse nearly to death and runs away when the animal's reaction exposes what he did. Britt catches him and learns that Clay's cruelty grew out of fear. When Britt's horse Scar later saves Clay from a rattlesnake, Clay's attitude begins to change, and caring for the injured sorrel eventually turns fear and hatred into trust.
