Anna Norquist comes from Sweden to marry Pete after two years of courtship by letter, only to find him convicted of murdering Seth Quincy during a robbery. Pete continues to protest his innocence, and Anna's faith in him turns into bitter distrust of the American justice system. Britt finds Pete's hidden, recently fired gun and persuades him to stop letting Anna believe an innocent man is being condemned. Pete finally confesses that he tried to rob Quincy for money to start married life with Anna and shot him when he was caught. After learning the truth, Anna remains in Smoke Falls and begins a new life there.
