Claudette's love for Paul is repeatedly blocked by violence, pride and her unhappy marriage to Paul's brother Renee. After Renee dies as violently as he lived, Paul is far away and Claudette believes the east wind will never bring him back. He eventually returns from military service wounded and convinced that he would only burden her. Their old friend refuses to let either hide behind pride, and Claudette and Paul finally choose a life together despite the fact that it cannot be perfect.
