Royal-born Marietta comes to the New World hoping to escape the rigid future planned for her, including a commanded marriage to Don Carlos. She falls in love with Captain Dick Warrington and begins to imagine a life based on freedom rather than rank. When duty seems to force her back to Europe, Dick helps her escape instead. The story closes with Marietta gaining a new title of her own choosing: Mrs. Warrington.
