Composer Franz Schubert falls in love with Mitzi and writes a song to tell her how he feels, asking his close friend to help present it. Instead, Schubert discovers that Mitzi and his friend love each other. He steps aside rather than stand between them, later helping clear a misunderstanding that has placed his friend in danger of a duel. With the couple reunited, Schubert gives them his song and accepts that the enduring love available to him is the music he creates.
