Pigeon feathers in a boarding-house room lead Holmes to a carrier-pigeon espionage ring sending military information abroad. After decoding a report on troops at Aldershot, Holmes sends a false message to draw one agent to a music hall, but another member of the ring shoots the man and Watson is arrested while holding his revolver. Police surgeon Dr. Hendricks then fabricates powder burns to strengthen the case against Watson. Holmes shows that only the surgeon could have fired a blank into the corpse and removed the telltale wadding during the autopsy, then bluffs Hendricks into betraying himself with a reference to pigeon feathers.
