During the years when the world believes him dead, Holmes travels as Sigerson to a Tibetan monastery where several foreigners seek permission from a Chinese envoy to continue to Lhasa. When the envoy is strangled after rejecting their requests, Russian cigarette ash seems to implicate Borodin, but Holmes notes that the killer used a left hand Borodin cannot use because his is artificial. The planted clue instead exposes the supposed American missionary as a German agent trying to reach Lhasa ahead of the Russians. She confesses and is handed to Chinese soldiers while Holmes resumes his secret travels.
