Retired colourman Josiah Amberley claims his wife fled with Dr. Ernest and a cache of securities, but Holmes finds the disappearance was staged. Amberley had trapped the pair in a sealed room and killed them out of jealousy, then concealed their bodies in an old well and fabricated the elopement and robbery. Exposed by Holmes and Lestrade, Amberley is taken away and ultimately ends his life in an asylum.
