On his silver wedding anniversary, Frank revisits a country hillside and remembers the young farm girl Megan, with whom he fell passionately in love decades earlier. He promised to take her away and marry her, but while arranging money and clothes he encountered friends from his own social world and lost the courage to cross the class divide. Frank returned to London and later married Stella without ever seeing Megan again. Back at the old place, an elderly local tells him that Megan never recovered from his disappearance and eventually killed herself beneath the apple tree where they had met, leaving Frank to confront the cost of the life he chose.
