Ishmael joins the Pequod and discovers that Captain Ahab has turned the whaling voyage into a personal hunt for Moby Dick, the white whale that took his leg. Starbuck warns that Ahab's vengeance is madness, but Ahab forges a special harpoon and drives the crew onward despite omens and even a moment when thoughts of home nearly weaken his resolve. When the whale is finally found, Ahab orders the attack. Moby Dick destroys the Pequod and kills Ahab and the crew, leaving Ishmael as the sole survivor of the doomed pursuit.
