Before a Supermarket Journal interview, Mr. Colby assumes the editor will be impressed by foreign education, so Mel poses as an eccentric professor and invents a grand academic past for him. The editor actually admires self-made men and attended the same trade school as Colby, so Mel’s confession unexpectedly creates a bond and earns him a little goodwill with Betty’s father.
