During the Irish conflict of 1921, rebel leader Dennis Reardon and English aristocrat Helen fall in love even as their countries stand opposed. Reardon joins negotiations in England and returns home urging his followers to accept a treaty and build Ireland through peace rather than vengeance. A dissident shoots him during a public address, but the wound is not fatal, and Helen joins him as he looks toward both a peaceful future and a life together.
