Red Mesa hires notorious gunfighter Jack Rhett as sheriff to stop Todd Malan's gang, and Rhett imposes order with a cold, calculating style that makes the townspeople fear him almost as much as the outlaws. Knowing his own luck has finally turned, Rhett deliberately faces Malan, saloonkeeper Bo Helen and their hired men in the open street, killing Malan and Bo Helen before he dies himself.
