Jean, Louis and Auguste are isolated lighthouse keepers on Three Skeleton Key when a derelict ship releases an enormous swarm of rats onto their rock. The rats overrun the lighthouse, consume the supplies and trap the men in the lantern room; Auguste loses his sanity while Louis is badly bitten. When the light finally goes out, the rats abandon the key aboard a grounded banana boat. Auguste is committed to an asylum, Louis dies from blood poisoning, and Jean is left permanently uneasy whenever an unfamiliar ship approaches.
