Lawson becomes obsessed with a beautiful, unnatural grove in Africa, builds his home beside it and falls increasingly under the influence of the ancient goddess Ashtaroth. Alarmed by his friend's transformation, the narrator follows a biblical prescription and destroys the grove, its sacred animals and stone shrine, even as a seductive voice begs him to stop, leaving him unsure whether he saved Lawson or destroyed something genuinely beautiful.
