Mountain guide Nunez survives a fall into an isolated Andean valley whose inhabitants have been blind for generations and cannot comprehend his claims about sight. He falls in love there and even agrees to have his eyes removed so he can belong, but on the eve of the operation he flees across the mountains to preserve his vision, only to return to civilization permanently blinded by the brutal journey through snow and glare.
