The submarine Amberfish attacks a Japanese carrier and then endures a prolonged depth-charge hunt while damaged systems, heat and bad air push the crew toward their limits. When the escort finally breaks off, Amberfish surfaces to find oil and wreckage from the carrier it hit, confirming the kill before the boat sets course for home with all eighty-two men.
