When wealthy Mrs. Parker is found dead at the bottom of her attic stairs, suspicion falls on her disabled housekeeper and former friend Mary Bignall, especially after Mrs. Parkers rings disappear. Dr. Christian learns that decades earlier Mrs. Parker had intercepted and switched letters between Mary and Ed Parker, then married Ed after an accident left Mary crippled. On the day of the death Mary finally found Eds original Valentine proving he had never rejected her; during their confrontation Mrs. Parker lost her balance and fell. Mary arranged the body and took the rings Ed had once meant for her, but Dr. Christian chooses to let the accidental death and Marys long suffering remain private.
