Randy Foster returns to Rivers End after losing both feet in combat. Army rehabilitation has taught him to use artificial feet confidently, he is preparing to return to work, and he wants an ordinary life rather than constant reminders that he is different. His wife Ellen, however, cannot stop protecting him, worrying over steps, drafts, traffic and every small exertion until her sympathy becomes suffocating. Randy asks Dr. Christian to help her see that he is capable, while Ellen separately complains that Randy refuses the special care she thinks he needs. Christian mischievously turns the situation around so that each begins treating the other as the fragile one. Randy fusses over Ellen, insists she rest and takes over the household, while Ellen experiences firsthand how oppressive excessive solicitude can feel. The scheme collapses when Christian and Judy arrive and learn the real reason Ellen has not been feeling well: she is pregnant. With a baby genuinely on the way, the couple's roles and worries find a more natural balance, and Christian admits that love and nature have solved the problem better than his meddling could.
