Years after young Claire Barnes ran away when her stern father refused to accept her love for Harry Hall, Dr. Christian learns that the now-elderly Barnes is dying and sends for the daughter he has never stopped missing. Claire returns as Blossom O'Toole, the stage name she adopted after leaving home. She admits to Christian that she and Harry never married and that her hoped-for theatrical success never came; Blossom is only a struggling second-rate actress. She is ashamed to let her father know how little came of the life she chose, but Christian persuades her to see him. At his bedside Claire allows the dying man to believe that she is happy and successful, giving him the comfort and pride he needs in his final moments. The reunion lets father and daughter make peace without forcing Claire to destroy the image that eases his death.
