On the eve of his wedding to Maria, gypsy prince Marko collapses with violent weakness that the camp believes is a black spell placed by Sarah, a woman who loves him and has vowed he will marry her or die. Maria secretly summons Dr. Christian despite the band's distrust of outside medicine. He notices that Sarah has been helping nurse Marko and tests the broth she gives him, discovering an obscure drug whose effects have been magnified by Marko's terror of the curse. Dr. Christian and the police stop Sarah before the dosing can become fatal. Marko recovers, Sarah is held until he is out of danger, and Dr. Christian returns to dance at Marko and Maria's wedding.
