Polly Palmer returns to Rivers End and throws herself into raising money for Dr. Christian's children's clinic, rekindling the childhood hero-worship she has felt for him all her life. She breaks her engagement to Lee Morgan and mistakes Dr. Christian's gratitude and affection for romantic love, leaving the embarrassed doctor afraid that correcting her will humiliate her. Lee follows her home but, instead of forcing the issue, helps make the hospital campaign a success. Once the work is finished, Polly recognizes that Dr. Christian is the ideal she has always adored but Lee is the man who truly needs and belongs with her; she chooses Lee and asks Dr. Christian to attend their wedding.
