An unidentified infant is left on Dr. Christian's doorstep with no note or label. Although several experienced mothers offer to adopt him, the bachelor doctor decides to keep the baby himself until the person with the strongest claim appears, and over the next six months he and Judy become deeply attached to the child. One day Lila Bronson, a woman Dr. Christian knew when she was younger, comes in with a sprained ankle. The doctor notices that her toes overlap in the same distinctive way as the baby's, and when she hears the child and asks to see him her emotional reaction confirms what he suspects. Lila has returned for the son she abandoned. Rather than accuse or shame her, Dr. Christian asks whether she would like to adopt the baby and raise him as her own, quietly restoring mother and child while admitting he knew that if he waited long enough the right person would come back.
