Danny returns to Rivers End for Christmas pretending to be a wealthy New York success, complete with expensive clothes and a car. When the car is identified as stolen, Dr. Christian learns that Danny had actually been working at a parking lot and, desperate to hide his failure and homesickness, took a customers car for what he intended as a short trip home. Dr. Christians testimony helps the court see the difference between a foolish, frightened mistake and a criminal career, and Danny is acquitted and decides to stay home and rebuild honestly.
