Local singer Susan believes her great chance has arrived when famous opera star Sigrid Holmquist and impresario Otto Kaufman visit Rivers End. Desperate to be heard, Susan even asks Dr. Christian to keep Holmquist from singing at a charity concert when the star seems to be catching a cold, but he refuses to manufacture an opportunity for her. After Holmquist performs brilliantly, Dr. Christian explains that the star once struggled for years through rejection, poor jobs and relentless study before she was ready. Susan accepts that she still has work to do, and Holmquist warmly invites her to come backstage after the next concert, giving her encouragement without pretending success can be rushed.
