After receiving national praise for one of her poems, Charlotte Dixon decides that ordinary life in Rivers End and marriage to dependable Steve are stifling her artistic future. She plans to divorce him and go to the city for a literary career, insisting that she no longer loves the commonplace husband she once chose. Dr. Christian sees that Charlotte is romanticizing freedom, so he recruits sophisticated Barbara Powell to make a convincing show of being interested in Steve. At the town picnic Charlotte's confidence in leaving evaporates as she watches Steve apparently fall for another woman. When she abandons the divorce and demands another chance, Steve carries the charade far enough to make her face what losing him would mean, then admits he loves only Charlotte. Dr. Christian reveals that Barbara's romance with Steve was arranged to give Charlotte something more real than poetry to think about.
